Newsletter | Harvesting delays pressures brazilian logistics

Earlier this year, Brazil, the world's largest soybean producer, has experienced a drastic reduction in the volume of its exports compared to last year.

In February, 55 thousand tons of soy were shipped per day, against 268 thousand in the same month of the previous year.

The comparison is even worse than the total figures for January: 49.5 thousand tons of soybeans in January 2021, against 1.397 million tons in January 2020. A reduction of approx. 86%, according to  AgRural.

This drop in export has placed great pressure on Brazilian soybean premiums.

Among the causes, the climate is predominant: droughts in September and October in Mato Grosso and Paraná, the main producing states, caused delays in planting; while rains have suspended the harvest at the beginning of the year, with machinery in the fields advancing with difficulties.

Also, rains limits loading operations at Brazilian ports prompting difficulties in trucks unloading/delivering the cargo.

This week, the heavy traffic and congestion on the transport routes of one of the principal corridors (Br-163) of the Northern Arc have attracted a lot of attention, and there are already impacts on the entire grain flow route, with long lines of trucks.

On the river terminal's access route in Miritituba / PA, traffic has been interrupted for at least a week on an unpaved stretch that gives access to the terminal, extending congestion to BR-230.

Traffic jam reaches 30 kilometres, with the city of Itaituba (southeastern Pará) reporting congestion of 5,000 trucks loaded with soy.

The most recent forecasts by the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) and the Atmospheric and Oceanic Administration (NOAA) indicate that rain will continue in Mato Grosso / Goiás MATOPIBA for the next days, putting pressure on logistics.

Besides, if the weather conditions return to normal, there may be a concentration of harvest from several states in the same period, thus increasing the demand for transport.  Currently, there are already some regions suffering from the lack of trucks to transport soybeans.

Many ships chartered to load in January ended up having their shipment delayed and postponed to February, which increased pressure and congestion at Brazilian ports and raised even more concerns about Demurrage claims.

According to the National Association of Cereal Exporters (ANEC), on the last 18th, there were 137 ships at anchor waiting for berth to load soybeans, while another 98 vessels are already in line-up scheduled to arrive in Brazilian ports.

The lineup from Brazil exceeds 16 million tons, resulting in pressure on sea freight and road freight, with records of trucks' scarcity in various regions.

Such delays are threatening to delay further shipments to China. In fact, part of China's buyers is buying soy from the United States, where the export window is stretching longer than normal in 2021.

The forecast is that the situation will normalize only in March.

Players involved in agribusiness logistics and vessel calling at Brazilian Ports should be aware of port congestion and berthing delays with potential for demurrage claims.

The situation demands attention regarding the quality of soybeans and the increase/excess of cargo moisture, which may result in potential claims and litigation.
